The Portal

The People-Based Learning Portal offers a way to listen to the voices that shaped the research, the concept and the book.

For so long, research has asked us to trust the summary without hearing the voices behind it. This is an invitation to listen for yourself.

It began as a multi-year conversation campaign, hundreds of voices gathered in small youth-led circles of four to seven people. These were real conversations, the kind where something shifts because someone is really listening.

All conversations were recorded, transcribed, and coded by multiple reviewers, then analyzed to identify recurring patterns and themes. This qualitative research process surfaced insights about how learning happens with and through other people, how it moves between us.

The portal weaves those insights together with selected personal stories from participants, centering lived experience alongside rigorous analysis. Together, they offer a research-backed, human-centered framework for understanding learning as a social and relational process.

The result is both a body of evidence and a living archive, one that honors individual voices while revealing the collective patterns that shaped People-Based Learning. Lived experience sits alongside analysis, not beneath it.

This portal was made possible through a collaboration with the non—profit Cortico, and the MIT Center for Constructive Communication, with deep gratitude to Hana Carey and Malcolm Nowlin for their care, craft and commitment for bringing these conversations to life.
